Soft Flame vs Jet Torch: Which Lighter Is Right for You?

Friends around a campfire at night in the Australian outback, one lighting the kindling

If you're staring at two lighters and one says "soft flame" while the other says "jet torch," you're not alone in wondering what the actual difference is.

Short answer: it matters a lot, depending on what you're using it for.

What's a Soft Flame?

A soft flame lighter produces a traditional, yellow-orange flame. These are our Spark collection. They burn at around 800–1000°C, run on flint ignition, and are the most fuel-efficient option. One fill can last weeks.

Best for: Everyday carry, candles, cigarettes, campfires, and calm conditions.

What's a Jet Torch?

A jet torch produces a focused, blue flame that's hotter, more directional, and far more wind-resistant. Our Flame collection covers single and double jets (1200–1400°C). The Inferno collection has triple and quad jets that push even higher.

Best for: Windy conditions, outdoor use, cigars, and precision lighting.

The Key Differences

Wind resistance: Soft flames blow out easily. Jet torches cut through 60+ km/h gusts. If you spend time outdoors in Australia, a torch is the pragmatic choice.

Fuel efficiency: Soft flames win here. Jet torches burn through butane faster.

Heat and precision: Jet torches are significantly hotter and more focused. This matters for cigars and targeted heat.

Altitude: Standard soft flames struggle at altitude. Quality jet torches perform at 3,000+ metres.

Noise: Jet torches hiss. Soft flames are silent. Purely preference.

So Which Should You Carry?

One lighter for everything? A single jet from our Flame collection. Indoor use and fuel economy? Spark. Maximum heat and wind resistance? Inferno.
